Common laser shop mistakes¶
A short, opinionated list of mistakes we see (and that public forums repeat endlessly). Fix these before you buy another machine.
1. Buying watts instead of a workflow¶
People shop peak watt marketing, then discover they needed exhaust, a rotary, LightBurn skill, or a different wavelength. Match laser types to the product you sell.
2. Skipping scrap grids¶
Copying a stranger’s speed/power screenshot onto a different tube, lens, and plywood brand wastes blanks. Use the starter settings method.
3. Wrong or unverified eyewear¶
CO₂ glasses on a fiber, fashion tint on a UV, or defeated door interlocks. See laser eye safety and fire.
4. Ignoring cooling until the tube dies¶
Bucket leaks, ignored water-protect, and “it was fine this morning” heat fade. Read CO₂ tube maintenance and CO₂ common problems.
5. Assuming the red dot is the beam¶
Framing lies until calibrated — on CO₂ pointers and fiber galvos alike.
6. Lasering mystery plastics¶
PVC/vinyl incidents still happen. Identify materials; refuse unknowns.

7. Chasing color marks on the wrong tool¶
Expecting wide, repeatable stainless color from a basic Q-switch without accepting MOPA-level control (and still needing tests).
8. Leaving jobs unattended¶
The fire you “only stepped away for” is the expensive kind.
9. Underpricing file prep¶
Variable-name plaque batches are not “one plaque × N.” See pricing laser work.
10. Learning only from random short videos¶
Structured practice beats doom-scrolling. That is literally why we point to Master LightBurn.
11. Cleaning optics with the wrong attitude¶
Over-cleaning with abrasive paper ruins coatings; never-cleaning lets power quietly disappear. Match cleaning frequency to smoke load, and inspect with a flashlight on a schedule.
12. Measuring focus once forever¶
Change material thickness, lens, or rotary diameter and your old spacer story is wrong. Re-focus is cheaper than remakes.
